Newport Outage Leaves Police, Others Powerless
About 2,850 residential and commercial customers, including the Police Department, were briefly without power in Newport Beach Sunday when an underground cable failed, according to police and Southern California Edison Co. spokesmen.
All but two of the affected customers along East Coast Highway between Bay Shore Drive and Marguerite Avenue had regained power within about 35 minutes of the failure, which occurred about 8:30 a.m., said Ken Bellis, Edison spokesman.
The other two customers, a restaurant and mobile home park in the Newport Dunes area, were without power until about 6:10 p.m., he said.
The Newport Beach police station’s backup power generator failed to go on automatically, according to Lt. Mike Blitch. The station was without power for about 5 minutes before the generator was turned on manually, he said, but the brief outage caused no problems.
