Indian troops killed one person in Ahmedabad, hub of the troubled western state of Gujarat, as religious and caste violence spread. The Press Trust of India reported that the army has also been dispatched to Baroda, a former center of colonial India, to stop violence there. It reported one killed and eight wounded. In Ahmedabad, 300 protesters were arrested at a rally protesting educational admissions policies favoring untouchables, tribal people and low-caste Hindus.
