A suspect in an April 13 robbery and shooting at Things For Your Head in Huntington Beach has been arrested by Kern County sheriff’s deputies near Lake Isabella.

Another suspect was fatally shot by an officer on the night of the holdup after he fired at the officer, who was saved by a bulletproof vest.

Huntington Beach police official Jo Ann Bergstrom said investigators reportedly received a tip that Christopher Michael Sheean was staying near the lake and would be using a particular pay phone in the area at 7 p.m. Monday.

Sheean, a 23-year-old former convict from the San Fernando Valley whose last known address was a California state prison, was arrested without resistance at the phone booth at 7:10 p.m., Bergstrom said. He had shaved off his mustache and cut his hair since the robbery.

He was being held Tuesday without bail at the Huntington Beach City Jail on a warrant charging him with the murder of his alleged accomplice, attempting to murder a police officer and armed robbery, Bergstrom said.

His alleged accomplice in the armed robbery, Thomas Albert Oglesby, 21, of North Hollywood, fired a shot that struck Huntington Beach Police Sgt. Ed Deuel’s protective vest, police said. The officer fired back at Oglesby, who later died at Fountain Valley Community Hospital.

The two gunmen had robbed the shop at 410 Pacific Coast Highway, according to police.

An employee set off a silent alarm at 9:55 p.m. and Deuel, who was making a routine bar check two doors away, was sent to the shop. The officer confronted two men as they left the store with bags of merchandise and ordered them to get on their hands and knees, Bergstrom said.

Sheean, who was armed with a sawed-off shotgun, fired several shots from his weapon but did not hit anyone before he fled on foot, police said.
