A Pacific Southwest Airlines DC-9 carrying 60 passengers returned to Lindbergh Field shortly after takeoff Tuesday when one of its two engines failed a few minutes into the flight.

Lindbergh tower chief Jim Dea said the jet took off at 9:07 a.m. and landed safely nine minutes later, after the pilot radioed that he was experiencing engine trouble.

It was the second such incident in two days, Dea said. On Monday, an American Airlines Boeing 727 bound for Dallas with 130 passengers aboard returned to Lindbergh Field 50 minutes after takeoff when a flashing oil bypass light prompted the jet’s pilot to shut down one of its three engines. Mechanics determined that the light had malfunctioned and returned the jet to service.

Meanwhile, officials at the American Airlines Maintenance and Engineering Center in Tulsa, Okla., were inspecting the Pratt and Whitney engine that on April 16 broke off a 727 that was flying from Dallas to San Diego. Flight 199, with 81 passengers and nine crew members aboard, landed 50 minutes after the engine fell off 26 miles east of Deming, N.M.
