Tight Security Surrounds L.A. Arrival of S. Korea President
Amid tight security, South Korean President Chun Doo Hwan arrived in Los Angeles on Wednesday, greeted by more than 1,000 Koreans from Southern California as well as three dozen demonstrators protesting his visit.
Chun, who was to stay in Los Angeles overnight before leaving today for a White House meeting with President Reagan, was welcomed by the South Korean ambassador to the United States, Byong Hion Lew; Consul General Kwang Han Hwang, and Los Angeles City Council President and Acting Mayor Pat Russell. The Korean Air Lines plane landed at the airline’s cargo terminal at Los Angeles International Airport as part of heavy security arrangements, which included Los Angeles police, South Korean agents and U.S. Secret Service agents.
More than 1,000 Koreans, many in native costume, quietly waved flags as Chun, accompanied by his wife, left the plane.
