Nudist Camp Sues to Keep Permit to Operate

Share

Attorneys for the Elysium Institute nudist camp in Topanga Canyon filed a lawsuit Thursday asking the Los Angeles Superior Court to overturn a January decision of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors denying the 17-year-old institution a permit to operate.

The lawsuit was filed to meet a Thursday deadline for the institute either to close its doors or challenge the supervisors’ ruling in court, attorney Paul Levine said.

But the lawsuit will not be served on the county for another 30 days, to give the supervisors time to reconsider their decision, Levine said.

The Jan. 29 vote not to renew Elysium’s permit was the latest in a series of attempts by the county since 1971 to close the institute.

The lawsuit alleged that the county’s action was contrary to the evidence in the case.

The facility has continued operating as usual throughout the legal dispute.
