Tennis Roundup : McEnroe Scores 6-1, 7-5 Win Over Krishnan at Atlanta

Top-seeded John McEnroe powered his way into the quarterfinals of the $375,000 WCT tennis tournament Thursday night at Atlanta with a 6-1, 7-5 victory over India’s Ramesh Krishnan.

Also advancing to the quarterfinals were No. 3-seeded Pat Cash, No. 6-seeded Tim Mayotte and Mike Leach. Cash defeated Leif Shiras, 7-6, 6-4; Mayotte beat Ken Flach, 6-3, 6-3; and Leach beat Steve Denton in a three-set marathon that lasted two hours, 25 minutes, 7-6, 6-7, 6-2.

Krishnan gave McEnroe all he could handle in the second set until the score was 6-5 in McEnroe’s favor. McEnroe then broke Krishnan’s serve in the final game, winning the match with a backhand volley.

McEnroe had 23 service winners, including seven aces.

Top-seeded Martina Navratilova lost only 10 points in the first set while breezing past Debbie Spence, 6-1, 6-4, in the quarterfinals of the $200,000 Chrysler-Plymouth Tournament of Champions at Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

No. 2-seeded Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria was upset earlier in the day, but her family will be represented in the semifinals by her younger sister, Katerina. No. 6-seeded Bonnie Gadusek beat Manuela Maleeva, 6-4, 6-2, while Katerina Maleeva defeated Anna Maria Cecchini of Italy, 6-2, 6-2.

In the other match, No. 3-seeded Claudia Kohde-Kilsch of West Germany rallied for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory over No. 5-seeded Catarina Lindqvist of Sweden.

Mary Lou Piatek and England’s Annabel Croft had little trouble getting past their opponents in the quarterfinals of the $75,000 Virginia Slims tournament at San Diego.

Croft beat No. 6-seeded Roz Fairbank of South Africa, 6-0, 6-3, while Piatek, once the world’s top-ranked junior player, beat Hu Na, 6-1, 6-3.
