Irvine : City Employees to Vote on Representation May 9

Share

A vote to determine whether Irvine’s municipal employees will be represented by the Irvine City Employees Assn. has been scheduled May 9. As of 5 p.m. Friday, the 15-day qualifying period for other unions to come forward with an offer to represent the city’s approximately 280 qualified employees ended without a challenge to the association, said Wally Kreutzen, director of Administrative Services.

Earlier this week, representatives of the association and Irvine city management met with an independent mediator to determine election rules, draft a sample ballot and decide on polling places, said David Suter, president of the association.

On Monday, notices informing employees of the impending election will be posted at city buildings, and ballot boxes will be posted May 9 at Irvine Civic Center in the morning and the Civic Center Annex in the afternoon.

Although its police force has been unionized for several years, Irvine is the only city in Orange County whose employees are not represented by an association.

Union and city officials have said that employee-management relations have remained good throughout the organizing process.
