Raids by more than 100 police officers began at dawn today in an effort to round up South-Central Los Angeles street gang members linked to 30 violent restaurant and motel robberies in Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.

The officers, carrying search and arrest warrants naming 17 locations and 22 suspects, said they had taken more than 20 persons into custody by noon and had recovered pistols, rifles, shotguns and a semi-automatic machine gun. Four of those named in the warrants were arrested several weeks ago in connection with a holdup in Tarzana during which two women customers were raped and a holdup in Long Beach during which an off-duty police officer was paralyzed by a gunshot.
