Harper LeBel, who graduated from Notre Dame High in 1981, was drafted in the 12th round Tuesday by the Kansas City Chiefs.

A tight end out of Colorado State University, LeBel will be tried at center and long snapper by Kansas City.

LeBel, 6-4 and 245 pounds, caught 59 passes for 780 yards in 1983 at Colorado State. He had 20 receptions in 1984 and was averaging 13 yards a catch until a foot injury sidelined him late in the season.

“It’s kind of neat,” LaBel said. “My whole family is proud. I’ve always known they’ve been behind me, it’s nice that it has finally arrived.”

A tight end since his junior year at Notre Dame, LaBel was not disappointed at being asked to play a different position in the pros.

“I don’t think that’s bad at all,” LaBel said. “My immediate goal is just to make the roster.”

LaBel will get his chance when the Chiefs’ training camp starts in early July.
