Two Children of Reno Air Crash Victim Get $195,000

The two children of a woman killed in the January crash of a Galaxy Airlines plane near Reno will share $195,000 in an insurance settlement.

This is the first such settlement stemming from the crash of the Lockheed Electra turboprop, which was carrying Minnesotans returning home from a gambling junket in Lake Tahoe, Calif.

Mary Ellen Krachey, 46, was one of the 70 people killed when the plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Reno Cannon International Airport.

The payment by Galaxy’s insurers will be split evenly between Krachey’s children, Michelle, 19, and Lance, 17, who live with their father in Tarzana, Calif., an attorney said.

David Martin, an attorney representing Galaxy, said three or four other claims resulting from the crash are on the brink of settlement. Twenty-nine wrongful death lawsuits also have been filed in Hennepin District Court, he said.

Galaxy carried $100 million in liability insurance with various underwriters through Lloyds of London, attorneys said.
