Drawn by mariachi bands, dancing and Mexican food, thousands attended Cinco de Mayo festivities throughout the Southland, celebrating the battle of Puebla in 1862 when Mexico defeated the French. Visitors, musicians and dancers surged through Olvera Street, the site of the first Spanish settlement in Los Angeles. Gatherings also took place at Lincoln Park in East Los Angeles, Pico Rivera, Santa Ana and South Los Angeles.
