A group estimated at more than 100 members of the animal rights group SUPRESS (Students United to Protest Research on Sentient Subjects) demonstrated at the City of Hope Medical Center in Duarte, where the Animal Liberation Front stole more than 100 animals last year. Animal rights organizer Javier Burgos said the group was calling for the medical center “to live up to its name and stop the atrocities, quackery and scientific fraud” that he said is going on in “hellholes.” Bonnie Rogers, director of media relations for the hospital, said the rank-and-file demonstrators are “misinformed because less than 1% of our budget goes to animal research and most of it is using frogs, sea slugs and fruit flies.”
