6 New Schools Near Downtown Planned
The state tentatively approved construction of six new schools and expansion of six existing schools in the area just west of Central Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Unified School District was told to proceed with planning for a $155-million program that would include construction of a new high school, a new junior high school and four new elementary schools in the Westlake, Echo Park and Silver Lake communities. This area is presently served by only one high school--Belmont--plus six junior highs and 12 elementary schools. Planning will include detailed examination of improvements to be made in existing campuses, plus determination of specific locations for the new buildings.
