Major League Roundup : Willie McGee’s Four Hits Lift Cardinals Over the Padres, 5-2

Willie McGee went 4 for 4, including an RBI double during a four-run fifth inning that carried the St. Louis Cardinals to a 5-2 win over the San Diego Padres at St. Louis Monday night.

The Cardinals overcame a 2-0 deficit with their big inning against Eric Show (3-2). Rookie Vince Coleman singled with one out and then stole his 18th and 19th bases of the season. Andy Van Slyke tripled home Coleman from third, and Tom Herr followed with a double that made it 2-2.

After Jack Clark popped out, McGee lashed his second double of the game to left-center to put St. Louis ahead, and Terry Pendleton capped the comeback with another RBI double.

St. Louis added an insurance run in the seventh off reliever Craig Lefferts. With two outs, McGee singled and was caught off first by Lefferts, but first baseman Steve Garvey’s throwing error allowed McGee to reach third. McGee scored on a wild pitch by Lefferts.

Winner Danny Cox (2-1) allowed eight hits and left after giving up singles to Garry Templeton and Al Bumbry to start the ninth. Reliever Ricky Horton balked but then got two outs before reliever Jeff Lahti got the final out for his second save.

A walk to Carmelo Martinez and singles by Garry Templeton and Show produced the Padres’ first run in the second inning. Coleman, the left fielder, fired a one-bounce strike to catcher Darrell Porter after fielding Show’s hit, but Porter dropped the throw at home plate for an error.

San Diego’s Kevin McReynolds hit his second homer of the season in the third inning.

San Francisco 7, Pittsburgh 5--The Giants took advantage of Jose DeLeon’s wildness to score four runs in the sixth inning to defeat the Pirates at Pittsburgh.

DeLeon (0-5) struck out nine over the first five innings but lost for the 14th time in 15 decisions over the last two years.

Bill Laskey (1-3) went five innings for the victory as the Giants, 0-6 at Three Rivers Stadium last season, won at Pittsburgh for the first time in seven games dating back to July 24, 1983.
