State and county officials are warning the public not to eat mussels caught along California beaches. “We are in the process of posting warning signs, as we do every year for the state,” said Toby Malligan, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services. Mussels that are not commercially grown produce a deadly toxin during warm weather months--requiring the quarantine from May 1 to Oct. 31, said Martha Wilson of the state Department of Health Services.
