Number of Black Elected Officials Up 6.2% in 1984

The number of black elected officials increased to 6,056 last year, a rise of 6.2%, according to a count by a think tank that studies issues affecting black Americans.

But blacks still hold only 1.2% of the 490,800 elective offices in the nation, the Joint Center for Political Studies said Friday.
