A Ramo Foul

I have just read “Simon Ramo’s Guide to Playing ‘Smart Up’ Tennis” (by Marshall Berges, April 28). As a tennis player for more than 40 years, I really must say something about the sentiments expressed by Ramo. It pervades much of what is wrong with tennis today. The so-called “gamesmanship” expressed in his espousings about how to confound one’s opponent makes me ill. The part I particularly disliked was the one referring to calling shots in at first and then out on crucial points. In fairness, some of the article was quite good but negated by the latter part which, in my opinion, is encouraging a form of mental cheating. Perhaps this “win at all costs” mentality is just a manifestation of Ramo’s corporate “survival” mentality.
