A plan for a 50-unit hotel at 21st Street and Pacific Coast Highway was approved Tuesday night by the Hermosa Beach City Council over the objections of neighbors.

Four councilmen voted to allow the three-story, Mediterranean-style hotel in the mostly residential neighborhood and changed the site’s zoning from residential to commercial. Councilmen Jack Wood abstained.

The hotel, called the Executive Inn, will feature a restaurant, laundry facilities and kitchenettes. Parking spaces for 65 cars--as required by city code--will be constructed underground.

Most of the 10 residents who spoke against the project argued that there would not be enough parking for employees and guests. Others worried that the additional traffic the hotel would generate would be unsafe for small children in the neighborhood.

“This is crazy--you’re adding congestion on top of congestion, and where’s the concern for our children?” asked resident Manuel Ruiz.
