Mexico City Wipes Out Rats Near City Center
Almost 120,000 rats have been killed in a recent campaign to rid the colonial city center of the rodents, the Health Ministry has announced.
Until two years ago, Mexico City’s largest wholesale produce market, La Merced, was situated in the heart of downtown Mexico City. When the market was moved, thousands of rats, deprived of their usual feasting, invaded nearby homes and sewers.
Each spring, ministry workers set out special poison and traps to capture the rats. So far this year, 119,402 rats have been killed, the ministry statement said.
