The Nation : Water Safeguards Backed

Legislation to force the Environmental Protection Agency to regulate 64 contaminants found in drinking water around the nation was approved by the House Energy and Commerce Committee. The proposed amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act of 1972 are similar to a bill that was endorsed May 2 by the Senate Environment Committee and set for floor debate in early June. Both measures also would require greater monitoring of drinking water supplies and force states to establish plans to protect underground aquifers that are a community's sole source of tap water.
