Edward J. Pfister has resigned as president of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, effective Dec. 31, it was learned Thursday.

Although no formal announcement was made, Pfister’s resignation was thought to have been brought on by a vote Wednesday by the CPB board to withdraw support for a PBS television trade mission to the Soviet Union.

As of Thursday evening, the board remained in private session.

Pfister’s resignation was confirmed by a board spokesman, who said board members were expected to vote to accept it.
