The Region : Guardian Angels Plan to Patrol Border

The founder of the Guardian Angels said the red-bereted, self-styled crime fighters will begin patrolling one of the most violent areas of the border in Tijuana and San Diego, where undocumented aliens are often robbed and beaten. Curtis Sliwa, 31, said 50 Guardian Angels from throughout Southern California will meet with Mexican authorities today to discuss their plans to patrol Colonia Libertad, a hillside residential area overlooking the border. He said the group also plans nightly patrols through “Dead Man’s Canyon,” a quarter-mile east of the San Ysidro Port of Entry. The group’s patrols will begin Saturday, Sliwa said. Law enforcement officials said they will try to discourage the plan. “They’re courting disaster,” said Cmdr. Cal Krosch, head of the Border Crimes Prevention Unit.
