Reigning Countess Pulls Hollywood Upset

Reigning Countess held off Charming Susan through the stretch Thursday and narrowly won the $48,600 Katonka Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Hollywood Park.

Ridden by Patrick Valenzuela, Reigning Countess finished a nose in front of the odds-on favorite, Charming Susan, ridden by Darrel McHargue. Trunk, ridden by Gary Stevens, was another 8 1/2 lengths back.

Reigning Countess ran the mile in 1:34 2/5 and paid $6.20, $2.80 and $2.10; Charming Susan, sent off at 4-5, returned $2.20 and $2.10, and Trunk paid $2.10 to show.
