Theodore D. Holstein; UCLA Professor, Physics Researcher
Theodore D. Holstein, 69, a UCLA professor of physics since 1965 and a member of the National Academy of Sciences, has died of an apparent heart attack.
Holstein had established an international reputation for his theoretical research into atomic and solid state physics. He died May 8.
He earned his doctorate degree at New York University in 1940 and while still a graduate student received recognition for his contributions to atomic theory. He was one of the researchers involved in developing radar at Westinghouse Research Laboratories in the early ‘40s.
He came to UCLA from the University of Pittsburgh.
He is survived by his wife, Beverlee; a daughter, Lonna Smith; a son, Stuart, and a grandson.
The family asks that contributions be made to the Theodore Holstein Memorial Fund, in care of the UCLA Physics Dept., 405 Hilgard Ave., Los Angeles 90024.
