Pavin Takes 4-Shot Lead, Sets Tournament Record

Corey Pavin broke a four-way tie for the lead with a 64, set a course and tournament record and established a four-shot advantage Friday in the second round of the $500,000 Colonial National Invitation tournament at Fort Worth, Tex.

“This game can be fun sometimes,” Pavin said after a birdie-birdie finish to his six-under-par effort.

Pavin, who last season set a rookie money-winning record of $260,536, completed two trips over the Colonial Country Club course in 130, 10 under par, for a course and tournament record. The old mark of 131 was set by Dave Stockton in 1967.

Pavin was not alone in his heroics, nor in his record-setting. The ideal playing conditions--mild temperatures and just the breath of a breeze--helped produce the lowest overall scoring in the tournament’s 39-year history.

Tom Watson, who last season gained his sixth Player of the Year designation, set a course and tournament record with a six-under-par 29 over the front nine. Watson, however, made a double-bogey on the 10th hole and finished with a 66 for a 140 total.

Mark O’Meara, who shared the first-round lead with Pavin, Jim Thorpe and Willie Wood, dropped back to second with a 68 and a 134 total. Thorpe, with a 72, slipped to 138, and Wood, who had a 69, was at 135.

Rosie Jones, best remembered for her second-place finish in last year’s U.S. Open, eagled the final hole to tie the course record with a seven-under-par 66 and take the opening round lead in the $175,000 Chrysler-Plymouth tournament at Chatham, N.J.

Only one under par at the turn, the fourth-year pro had four birdies coming home, including three in a row, and polished off her performance with a 13-foot putt on No. 18 for the eagle.

The best round of Jones’ career left her with a three-shot lead over Nancy Lopez, Jan Stephenson, Kris Monahan and Sally Quinlan.

Two-time junior champion Pearl Sinn of Bellflower added the Los Angeles City senior title to her list of achievements as she finished with a one-over-par 145 and a two-stroke victory in the 62nd annual championship at Griffith Park.

Sinn, who won her second junior championship earlier this year, became the first player since Amy Alcott to take both the senior and junior events in the same year.

Sinn, 17, who performed impressively earlier this year in an LPGA tournament at Oakmont Country Club, has announced that she will attend Arizona State in the fall.

Former Bruin Flori Prono, who had the day’s best round of 72 on the par-73 Wilson course, finished second at 148. Defending champion Jennifer Steiner, another former UCLA player, was fourth at 155.
