A 2-year-old Santa Ana boy who managed to open the front door and run out into the street was hit and seriously injured Saturday by a passing motorist who failed to stop, police said.

Santa Ana Police Lt. Bob Jordan said Oscar Arias got out of the house at 1400 W. Myrtle St. about 4:05 p.m. The boy’s mother, Maria Arias, noticed he was missing and ran outside.

Jordan said the mother saw the approaching car and tried to warn the motorist of her son running into the street. But the car hit the boy, dragging him several feet, he said.

After hitting the boy, the motorist drove away. The child was taken to Mercy General Hospital in Santa Ana and transferred to Fountain Valley Community Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition with head and leg injuries.

Jordan said investigators had obtained the license number of the vehicle and were searching for the hit-and-run driver.
