A suit filed in Santa Maria Superior Court on behalf of 135 of the approximately 200 residents of the Santa Barbara County town of Casmalia charged that at least five adults have died and two babies have been stillborn as the result of negligence at the Casmalia Resources Inc. toxic waste dump. An unspecified amount was sought in the action filed by San Francisco attorney Cory Birnberg. On May 3, a $1-billion class-action suit was filed in the same court by three Casmalia residents who contended that the populace has suffered ill health and that property values have declined because of the dump. Dump operators had no immediate comment.
