San Diego County supervisors on Tuesday ordered county workers driving radio-equipped vehicles to report sightings of stranded motorists to a central dispatching system.

There are 1,380 vehicles in the county fleet with radios, including sheriff’s and marshal’s cars, animal control trucks, and public works and general services vehicles.

According to a report submitted by Chief Administrative Officer Clifford Graves, the California Highway Patrol now receives about 250 calls a day reporting stranded motorists.

Graves said additional staff members in the dispatch center may be needed if the new policy floods the system with calls.

The policy is part of a general county effort to extend aid to stranded motorists. County officials are also working to obtain state funding for a network of call boxes to be placed on freeways.
