Despite the popularity of wild pigs as a game animal, naturalists expressed concern about their invasion of the scenic coastal countryside north of San Francisco. “Anything that can’t get out of their way gets eaten,” said Skip Schwartz, who cares for game at the 1,000-acre Audubon Canyon Ranch bird sanctuary adjacent to Bolinas Lagoon. Since late last year, he said, signs of the feral pig’s presence--including the carcasses of other animals--have been detected around the ranch and other secluded parts of Marin County. Fish and Game information officer Jack White said that once the pigs move in, they are almost impossible to move out, and Schwartz agreed that “we’re going to have to deal with feral pigs well into the future.”
