Artesia : Residents Will Be Charged for Street Lighting
In a move to bolster the city’s budget, the City Council has voted to create a street lighting district and charge landowners an annual fee to cover the city’s yearly lighting bill of $130,000.
The city now pays the street lighting bill out of its general fund. But Acting City Manager Harold Campbell said the city has had no budget surplus in recent years, leaving the city no choice but to pass the lighting cost on to residents.
A public hearing to set fees for the new lighting district will take place at 8 p.m. June 10 in the City Council chambers at City Hall, 18747 Clarkdale Ave.
Campbell has proposed charging all landowners a flat fee of $15 a year and a monthly fee based on the size of the lot abutting a lighted street. For example, the monthly fee for an owner of a 50-foot-wide residential lot would be about $2, he said.
