A 19-year-old San Diego State University student pleaded guilty Thursday to assault with intent to commit rape upon the mother of a girl he used to date.

Steven Svare, of La Mesa, also admitted to San Diego Superior Court Judge Daniel Kremer that he entered the 42-year-old woman’s La Mesa apartment on March 20 with the intent to rape her daughter.

Kremer told Svare he could face a maximum state prison term of seven years and four months plus a $20,000 fine for the burglary and assault charges.

Svare will have to register as a sex offender wherever he lives because of his conviction, Kremer told him.

Svare was arrested after La Mesa police found a list of potential rape victims in his car that the young man admitted he wrote during a Bible class.

Svare didn’t rape anyone. Nighbors came to the rescue of the 42-year-old woman. The mother and her daughter were to be the first two victims, authorities said. Robert Freeman, Svare’s attorney, said most of the people listed were fictitious.

Kremer said he would consider housing Svare in the California Youth Authority because of his age, and would consider the need for a diagnostic study by prison officials on what type of sentence to impose.

Kremer set sentencing for July 3. Svare remains in jail in lieu of $500,000 bail.
