Library Intern Selected

Michelle Springer of Harbor City has been selected for the 1985-86 Library of Congress internship program in Washington. Springer, a flight attendant for Pan American Airlines, will receive a master’s degree in June from UCLA’s Graduate School of Library and Information Science. Six interns are selected each year for the five-month program from a list of nominees submitted by library schools nationwide.

Ann D’Amato of San Pedro will become the harbor area deputy for Los Angeles City Councilwoman Joan Milke Flores on June 3. D’Amato, 34, will retain her duties as planning deputy for the 15th District. Mario Juravich, 38, will replace D’Amato as assistant harbor area deputy.

Bonnie Just of Torrance has been selected by the National Endowment for the Humanities in Washington to participate in a summer seminar for secondary school teachers at Wayne State University in Detroit. The five-week seminar will concentrate on the writings of the Grimm brothers and their significance in today’s society. Just, selected from 15 applicants nationwide, will be one of the 885 secondary teachers chosen to participate in 57 seminars in the humanities.

Nan Snavely of Gardena was named Gardena’s Outstanding Senior Citizen of 1985 by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors at its Older Americans Recognition Day. Snavely, honored for community volunteer work, is serving her sixth term as president of the Gardena Senior Citizens Club.

San Pedro teachers representing 32 schools were honored at the San Pedro Peninsula Chamber of Commerce’s teacher appreciation luncheon. Honorees are Eve Marin, Susan Balmanno, Esperanza Rede, Selma Hunter, Gail Schmidt, John Gonzales, Marie Emerson, Althea Clark, Tommie Boles, Pearl Willett, Glen Fisher, Juli Wagner-Sallus, Cecil Sparks, Linda Wiley, Merrie Nishisaka, Josephine Garcia, Dr. Joan Kiely, Dr. Joseph Cuseo, Tom Graves, Cathy Howard, Joyce Wallner, Freda France, Paula Levi, Alberto Rede, Jeanine Mauch, Dorothy McCullough, Bonnie Winters, Ruth Teutsch, Doris Cashman, Barbara Goble, Don Boucher and Anne Fenimore.

Dr. Howard Laitin of Torrance has been awarded the Army’s meritorious service medal. He is credited with enhancing the combat readiness of the Army during more than 30 years of service. Laitin, a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve, is a chief scientist and program analyst at Hughes Aircraft Co.’s Electro-Optical and Data Systems Group in El Segundo. He also served as a program and evaluation adviser to government agencies and nonprofit organizations.

Speech teacher Joanne Karr, senior Brian Davidson and sophomore Donna Goldwasser of the Westchester High School speech and debate team have won trophies at the Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies speech tournament. Karr placed second in original oratory and Davidson and Goldwasser placed third in dual interpretation.
