Adoption Guild Tennis Tournament : Briggs-Case Advance to Semifinals

Top-seeded Mike Briggs and Ross Case defeated Steve Schultz and Chris Merrill, 6-3, 6-4, Monday in the quarterfinals of the men’s open division of the 24th Adoption Guild Tennis Tournament at the John Wayne Tennis Club.

Briggs and Case, the tournament’s defending champions, will meet UC Irvine’s Julian Barham and Darren Yates in the semifinals. Barham and Yates beat Anteater teammates Ken Derr and Art Hernandez, 7-6, 7-6.

Second-seeded Curt Condon and Steve Simon defeated Bob Hochstadter and Dick Miller, 6-2, 6-4. Condon and Simon will meet James Harper and Curt Stalder, who beat Jan Eric Palm and Tom Smith, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

In the women’s open doubles quarterfinals, No. 1 Jill Beck and Linda Mallory defeated Debbie Goldberger and Debbie Graham, 6-1, 6-0. Beck and Mallory will face Gretchen Miller and Karen Reitenmeier, who beat Shannon Gordon and Sally Huss.

No. 2 Gail Glasgow and Susie Warfield beat Jessica Algazi and Joanie Urban, 6-4, 7-5 and will meet Debbie McCormick and Cherie Kay, who defeated Janice Metcalf and Doreen Irish, 6-4, 6-3.
