Track Star Dies--Curtis Perry, 25, an All-American hurdler at Long Beach City College and a former Banning High School track star, died Sunday of liver cancer. Perry came back from a blood disease to be part of LBCC’s record-setting hurdles relay team in the early 1980s. Funeral services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Judson Baptist Church, 451 East 223rd St., Carson.

All-Suburban League--James Ortega of Glenn was named the Most Valuable Player in the Suburban League in baseball. Named to the all-league team were first baseman Dan Gleason of La Mirada, second baseman Ray Martinez of Artesia, third baseman Mitch Hawk of Mayfair, shortstop Art Rodriguez of Glenn, designated hitter Vic Matos of Artesia, catcher Craig Wilson of La Mirada, outfielders Mike Serna of Glenn, Mike Ramirez of Mayfair and Kelly Brooks of La Mirada and pitchers Julian Gamez of Glenn and Mike Lamanski of Bellflower. Pitcher John Hatten of Artesia made the team as utility player.

Whittier Coach Selected--Dave Jacobs, basketball coach at Whittier College, has been selected for the basketball staff at the National Sports Festival July 21-Aug. 1 at Baton Rouge, La. Jacobs will assist Stanford Coach Tom Davis with a team of high school seniors and college freshmen from the West.
