First in San Jose : Chain to Build Second Hotel in Costa Mesa
Construction has begun on the $20-million Beverly Heritage Hotel, the second of Northview Corp.'s planned coast-to-coast chain of upscale, mid-priced hotels, and now the latest element of a 100-acre urban complex being developed in Costa Mesa by Transpacific Development Co.
The first Northview hotel opened last year in the Silicon Valley near the San Jose airport. The Beverly Heritage is scheduled for completion in spring, 1986, and future plans call for the addition of a 100-room tower.
The new hotel’s neighbors at the intersection of the San Diego and Newport freeways will include the South Coast Metro Center, a 50-acre office complex of which the first 12-story tower is finished, a second under construction and a third about to begin; the Lakes, a 600-unit residential development, an adjoining 20,000-square-foot retail center, and a 3.3-acre greenbelt of parks, open spaces, a lake and another hotel.
The 238-room Beverly Heritage is located at Avenue of the Arts and Town Center Drive on a three-acre site diagonally across the street from the new Orange County Performing Arts Center.
Designed by Gin Wong Associates of Los Angeles, architects also of South Coast Metro Center and The Lakes shopping mall, the lodging structure will consist of a six-story guest-room tower connected by a glass-enclosed bridge to a skylighted lobby featuring a sunken lobby bar and lounge with fireplace. A separate two-story pavilion with its own entrance will include 4,000 square feet of conference and meeting rooms, an 1,800-square-foot entertainment lounge and a 3,500-square-foot restaurant. A three-level garage and parking area will accommodate 270 cars.
As a service to business travelers, every room will be equipped with an outlet for a personal computer and free transportation will be offered to and from nearby John Wayne Airport.
General contractor for the project is Nielsen Construction Co. Consulting engineers include Brandow & Johnston (structural), James A. Knowles & Associates (mechanical) and Cohen & Kanwar Inc. (electrical). Landscape architecture is by POD Inc. and interior designers are Barry Design Associates Inc. and Dennis Allemand & Associates Design Inc.
