KCET GARNERS 9 AWARDS : KCBS-TV LEADS PARADE WITH 14 EMMYS

KCBS-TV Channel 2, with a strong showing Saturday by “2 on the Town” and various segments of its weeknight newscasts, was the top winner at the Los Angeles Emmy Awards, though public station KCET Channel 28 also shared the spotlight.

The CBS-owned station received 14 Emmys at the 37th annual ceremony held at the Century Plaza. Channel 2’s total doubled the number of awards bestowed on network rivals KABC-TV Channel 7, which won four, and KNBC-TV Channel 4, with three.

Among the independent stations, KCET collected nine of the coveted statuettes. KTLA Channel 5 and KTTV Channel 11 both earned four awards, Orange County public television station KOCE-TV Channel 50 received three and KHJ-TV Channel 9 received one.

KCBS-TV’s “2 on the Town” came up with seven victories, including two for host Melody Rogers and other honors for segments on the Olympics, children in Belfast and a four-part series on Russia. Of the six awards earned by Channel 2’s newscasts, there were two for Roy Firestone reports on jockeys and American jazz, another pair for a five-part series titled “Cuba: Castro and the Caribbean” and recognition for “Bill Stout’s Perspective” and Jim Mitchell’s investigative piece on pesticides.

“KCET Journal” accounted for three of the PBS station’s Emmys in the categories of public affairs series, children/youth special and host/moderator, which went to the late Clete Roberts for his work on “Water, Wealth & Power.”

KCET’s “World Class Spectacular: The Olympic Arts Festival” was picked as the top entertainment special among independent stations, and “Actors on Acting” was named best information series.

It was a special night for KTLA reporter Stan Chambers, who took the Emmy for live coverage of an unscheduled news event and received the Governors Award from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for outstanding achievement in his 38-year career at the station. “Not a Question of Courage,” a program about disabled individuals, won KTLA’s other three awards.

KABC-TV’s “Eye on L.A.” was selected as the best information series among network stations, and its “Invisible Soldiers” won in the category of public affairs specials.

KNBC-TV honors were collected by “Headlines on Trial” as the top public affairs series on a network station and “The Final Victory” in the special events category.

KTTV’s “Ten O’Clock News” was named best daily news program among independent stations for the second consecutive year.

David Selby, who plays Richard Channing on “Falcon Crest,” hosted the non-televised event.
