6.9 Quake Jolts Samoan Islands

HONOLULU —
A major earthquake occurred early today in the Samoan islands area of the South Pacific, but there were no immediate reports of damage.
The earthquake was recorded at a preliminary magnitude of 6.9 on the Richter scale, according to U.S. Geological Survey scientists in Golden, Colo. Early readings placed the epicenter of the earthquake about 170 miles southwest of Pago Pago in American Samoa, the survey said.
