FBI Agents Seize Goods Kept in Storage Locker by Accused Spy

FBI agents raided two storage facilities in the Northern California towns of Davis and Woodland on Wednesday and took away some of the goods--including audio cassettes--that an accused spy, Jerry A. Whitworth, had stored there since September, 1983, according to the owner of the storage lockers.

Dan Walker, owner of Yolo Transfer & Storage, said that after he learned of Whitworth’s arrest “we contacted the FBI yesterday (Tuesday) and let them know Whitworth had some storage with us. They came out this morning with a search warrant. They went through the storage and took away with them 10 cartons (of Whitworth’s belongings).”

Walker said material was taken only from the Davis storage locker. Nothing was taken from Woodland because the storage space there contained only furniture “and the FBI was not interested in that.”

Gave Him an Inventory

Walker said the two FBI officers who visited his firm’s premises in Davis gave him an inventory of the materials they had taken away, and it included audio cassettes.

Whitworth’s goods had been in storage with his firm at the two facilities in Davis and Woodland since Yolo Transfer & Storage moved Whitworth and his wife, Brenda L. Reis, to Davis from the Bay Area in September, 1983, Walker said. Walker said Whitworth had not removed anything from storage since then.

Walker said that last week Whitworth had notified the firm that the couple were moving back to the Bay Area, and that their goods would be moved Wednesday of this week. But Reis called Walker Wednesday and cancelled the move, explaining that the job she had been offered in the Bay Area had been withdrawn.

Whitworth was arrested Monday in San Francisco.
