San Diego police are asking the district attorney’s office to change the charges against two jailed transients from assault to first-degree murder after the death Wednesday night of a man the two are accused of attacking a month ago.

John Robert Dixon, 35, died at UC San Diego Medical Center Wednesday night of injuries he reportedly received in a beating May 6. On that night, police said, they found Dixon, also a transient, lying unconscious and bleeding profusely in the walkway of a building in the 1100 block of 10th Avenue.

That night, police arrested James Joe Samuels, 33, and Guy Whitney Geordt, 22, on suspicion of assault. The two have since been held in the County Jail downtown.
