Monterey Park has been designated one of eight all-American cities by the National Municipal League. Of the 500 cities that competed for the honor, Monterey Park was the only California city chosen. In ceremonies commemorating the citation, Lt. Gov. Leo McCarthy praised the city for its “creativity, common sense and sensitivity” in dealing with its racially mixed population. Nineteen different Asian cultures are represented in Monterey Park’s population.
