California health officials designated 50 health departments in 31 counties and in Long Beach for use by people seeking to have their blood screened for acquired immune deficiency syndrome. Several of the sites are already receiving clients, and most should be in operation by July 1, state Health Director Kenneth Kizer said. The sites are being designated as alternatives to local blood banks under legislation enacted this year to protect the privacy of the person being tested. Besides the Long Beach facility, sites in Southern California are operated by the health departments of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Diego and Imperial counties.
