The Pentagon’s Strategic Defense Initiative Organization has awarded $7 million for research in space energy to a consortium headed by California State University, Long Beach. The consortium, which also includes UCLA, the University of Florida and four private businesses, will investigate ways to produce nuclear energy more efficiently in outer space, said Prof. Richard Williams, dean of engineering at Cal State Long Beach. The project for the strategic defense initiative, popularly known as President Reagan’s “Star Wars” plan, begins in August.
