San Diego Roundup : Celebrity Tennis Tournament Starts Monday at La Costa

Running backs Eric Dickerson, Marcus Allen, Walter Payton, Ottis Anderson and Franco Harris will headline the field in the Gordon’s Gin sports celebrity tennis tournament Monday through Thursday at the La Costa Hotel and Spa.

The field includes 40 athletes from 11 sports competing in round-robin mixed doubles. Among the female competitors is Candy Costie-Burke, a 1984 Olympic gold medal winner in synchronized swimming.

The Offshore Surf Shop Pro surfing competition for men and women will be at 7:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at Carlsbad State Beach.

Jim Palmer of Carlsbad is in sixth place in the season series for men. David Barr of Carlsbad is seventh and Paul Barr of Carlsbad is eighth. Sherri Crummer of Oceanside is sixth and Debbie Beacham of La Jolla is seventh in the women’s division.

Racing action will resume at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Cajon Speedway. Mark Norris still leads the super stock division and Mike Carver is first in the pro stock division.

The San Diego Triathlon to benefit the St. Vincent de Paul Center will be at 7 a.m. Sunday off Harbor Island. Events include the 1-kilometer swim, 10-kilometer run and 30-kilometer bicycle ride.

Several area cyclists figure to be prominent finishers in Sunday’s California District Cycling Championships at Griffith Park in Los Angeles.

In the junior division (ages 16-17), Geoff Doyle and Joe Pusl of San Diego are among the favorites in the 20-kilometer race. Competing in the men’s point race is Ted Kirkbride of Escondido, and in the seniors is Tony Olsen of San Diego.

The winners of Sunday’s races, sponsored by the United States Cycling Federation, will advance to the National Championships. Racing begins at 10 a.m. on Vermont Canyon Road in front of the Greek Theatre.
