A San Diego police officer early Saturday shot and injured two Mexican men who were suspected border bandits, a spokesman said.
Officer Charles Woodruff and Border Patrol Agent Romero Garcia were attempting to arrest three men who reportedly had robbed at knife point an illegal alien crossing the border, said Bill Robinson, a police spokesman.
As the officers surrounded the men, about 200 yards east of the port of entry, one suspect, Ruben Lopez Diaz, 23, reportedly pulled a knife and threatened the Border Patrol agent.
A second suspect, Felipe Jesus Ramos Bueno, 27, threatened him from behind, Robinson said.
Woodruff shot both Diaz and Bueno in the leg. Diaz was able to run across the border but was later captured by Tijuana police, he said.
Bueno was taken to Chula Vista Community Hospital, where the gunshot wound to his right calf was treated.
He was booked into County Jail on suspicion of robbery and assault, Robinson said.
Diaz is under guard at a Tijuana Hospital pending his transfer to County Jail. The third man ran across the border and is still at large.
