Monroe-Theus Win Tennis Tournament
Two basketball players, Earl Monroe and Reggie Theus won the Gordon’s Gin sports celebrity tennis tournament Thursday at the La Costa Hotel courts, defeating Phil Simms and Doug Burke, 8-6, in the eight-game pro set final.
Theus, a Sacramento Kings guard, and Monroe, a former guard for the New York Knicks, took a 4-0 lead in the title match before hanging on to beat the New York Giant quarterback and Burke, a member of the 1984 silver-medal winning U.S. Olympic Water Polo team.
Monroe and Theus had reached the final by knocking off Franco Harris and Happy Hairston in Thursday morning’s semifinals. Simms and Burke surprised the favored duo of Ahmad Rashad and Steve Largent to reach the championship match.
