An environmental group will be allowed to land on San Clemente Island this week and attempt to round up about 700 wild goats that have been labeled a threat to endangered plants and animals. The Navy has given Fund for Animals from July 5 to July 26 to trap as many of the goats as possible while maintainance is performed on the island, which is used for gunnery practice. The Department of the Interior has ordered the Navy to rid the island of goats because they eat rare plants which are also essential to two endangered species of birds and one species of lizard found there. Fund for Animals trapped 870 goats and took them off the island by barge last February.
