Michael Gross, setting his second world record in three days, swam the men’s 200-meter butterfly in 1 minute 57.01 seconds at the West German National championships Saturday.

Gross, 21, of Frankfurt, shaved three-hundredths of a second off the previous mark held by Jon Sieben of Australia and boosted his total of world records to four. Sieben had set the record when he won a gold medal, upsetting Gross, in last summer’s Olympic Games.

Two days ago, Gross set a 400-meter freestyle record with a time of 3 minutes 47.80 seconds in the same pool.

Gross also holds world records in the 100-meter butterfly and the 200-meter freestyle , which he set in the 1984 Los Angeles Games.
