L.A. DUO WINS ON GUITARS

Los Angeles-based guitarists Paul Rosandich and Douglas Rubio took first-place honors in the first international duo guitar competition sponsored by the Guitar Foundation of America, held at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday.

The award included a matched pair of concert guitars made by Ricardo Sanchis-Carpio of Valencia, Spain, and $1,000.

Both Rosandich and Rubio are USC graduates. Rosandich was awarded a BM in classical guitar performance in May. He has studied privately with Pepe Romero and Malcolm Hamilton.

Rubio received a BA in music from UC Irvine in 1979, an MM from USC in 1983 and currently is studying for his DMA in classical guitar performance at USC, where he also is an assistant lecturer in the music school.

Second-place duo winners were Edith Leerkes and Ed Westerik of Holland. Robert Torres and Mark Gutierrez of La Habra tied for third place with Joseph Hoey and Brian Morris of Tallahassee, Fla.

Second and third place winners received cash awards and sets of guitar strings.

In the concurrently held foundation’s third annual GFA solo competition, first-place winner was Mary Akerman of Tallahassee, Fla.

She received a pre-arranged West Coast concert tour and $1,000.
