Tour de France : Hinault Takes Lead With Win
Bernard Hinault of France won the eighth leg of the Tour de France cycling race and gained the overall lead Saturday.
Hinault dominated his rivals throughout the 47-mile time trial between Sarrebourg and Strasbourg, finishing in 1 hour 34 minutes 55 seconds. He was 2:20 ahead of runner-up Stephen Roche of Ireland.
Charles Mottet of France was a surprising third, 2:26 behind Roche, and Greg LeMond of the United States was fourth, 2:34 seconds behind.
Hinault leads the overall standings with a time of 41:41:02, with LeMond second, 2 minutes 32 seconds back.
Jeannie Longo of France won the 47-mile sixth leg of the second Women’s Tour de France and retained the overall leader’s yellow jersey.
Longo leads the standings with a time of 12:18:18. Maria Canins of Italy is second, 48 seconds behind. Janelle Parks of the United States is 12th, trailing the leader by 2:39, and Phyllis Hines of the United States is 14th, 2:44 off the pace.
